Dr. Milind Kulkarni HR L&T

Just because I am holding a senior position in HR with L&T, I have been getting many requests from my relatives, friends,  acquaintances, to help their sons or daughters, who have freshly passed out from engineering college, to get job in L&T. The number of requests are huge. So many fresh engineers are unemployed, I could hardly helped only few of them to get job in L&T or in some other companies where I have contacts. I feel bad to say NO to many of the requests or for those whom I can't help. They get disappointed... I can understand. Parents invest their life time earned money just to see their sons or daughters getting degree in engineering.

They think that jobs are easily available for engineers. After interviewing many of them, I can't even tell them  that your son or daughter do not even have minimum required technical knowledge. Getting first class or distinction has become so easy without having fundamental knowledge of engineering. It's high time for parents to stop running behind engineering degrees.

USA produces around 1 lakh engineers per year for a $16 trillion economy.

India produces 15 lakhs engineers for a $2 trillion economy.

The earlier mass recruiting sector was Manufacturing. It used to recruit from the core branches like Electrical, Mechanical, Civil etc. But, Manufacturing is relatively stagnant at 17% of the GDP. So the core branch placements have become very difficult.

The more recent mass recruiter was the IT sector. It grew from scratch to almost 5% of the GDP in a short time. IT Employed millions of engineers.

Now, IT is also saturating. Only good, skilled IT Engineers are in demand.

If you look at the sectoral composition of Indian economy, most of the sectors do not need engineers. Tourism is 10% of the GDP, does not require engineers. Financial sector, Trade, Hotels and Restaurants do not require engineers. Requirement of engineers in Health, Education, Agriculture is also negligible.

More than 50% of the GDP has no role for Engineers. Still most of Indian youth are becoming Engineers. The situation is not sustainable .

Demand is low while supply is high. Over and above this, skill level of an average engineer is poor, almost its non-existent in many cases. If we leave aside the top 100–200 colleges, most fresh engineers have no idea of what they studied. Ask a fresh mechanical engineer, can s/he design a simple frame?

Today the situation is that most engineers are working in a field that has no connection to what they have studied in the college. This is a waste of resources.

Engineering degree does not come cheap. It costs about 10-15 lakhs. For poor parents, its a huge burden. When their son / daughter is not able to secure a job, they are devastated.

For the nation, you can calculate the loss. Leave around 1 lakh engineers that NASSCOM says are employable. The rest 14 lakhs have each wasted 10 lakhs of fees. That totals to around $20 Billion. Almost equal to the Government’s spending on healthcare. Over this, there is loss of human capital.

India need to replan the whole engineering education system. Goverment needs to  cut down on the number of colleges and improve the quality in the rest.

Also students should explore other career options than everyone becoming Engineers.

When it comes to education, a multitude of options are available today! From Aviation, to Hotel Management, Short Term Programs to big movie production courses, Data science, cyber security, Information Security, Cloud Technology Designing, Indian Armed Forces, Animation and VFX, Digital Marketing, Film Making, Technology Courses like SQL, PHP, Big Data, C, C++, etc. and much more!

For a majority of courses like these, there are entrance exams too, such as the NATA, CEED, NID entrance, NIFT entrance, NDA entrance, MBA Entrance, Hotel Management entrance, CET, NEET and many more! Here, the right training goes a long way in getting your child admission to their dream institute! Do you know what are the top career tracks of 2018 other than engineering?? See the following list.

How to create a good learner?

A teacher should understand that what exactly the child should become at the year end. What qualities the child should possess. No matter the surrounding where the child comes from. It's teacher's and the school's atmosphere which makes child easy to adopt new situations. Yes, we know that it’s not an easy task to transform them in a day, but it is definitely going to happen gradually as the year ends.

In what kind and in which form the changes should take place?

Yes, it's big and critical question as its answer differs from child to child and by age also the method of application changes accordingly.

Here are some important problems which this generation is facing. As compared to the previous generations we can easily point it out. Today’s  generation is very fast in adoption of academics as well as understanding that if they are able to adopt whatever we are teaching in various methods.

  • In nuclear family the child is becoming friend of parents, as its basic need to imitate so whatever he or she watches they follow it blindly.
  • Behavior is science, Respect to elders, Obedient, Flexibility, giving space to others, respect for others decisions make the child best learner.
  • To go with this, we as teachers have to make them excited- concept- activities-writings- recalling - revision these are steps for a child to become a perfect learner.
  • First step is very important- teacher should possess some dramatic and voice moduling tact’s according  to make the child aware of each and every words expression no matter which class is that emotions are the best weapons to implement changes. Every child should feel that teacher is justifying their emotions, self esteem and opinions.
  • There are some age wise small changes to make the child comfortable with a teacher.
  • In pre primary like Playgroup and Nursery, a teacher is like world for child. Here they carry more responsibility than anyone else. It's their responsibility to mould the child towards studies as well as physical growth, mental growth by sharing many surrounding things which we call EVS. Academy by implementing writing skill by using writing patterns and doing exercises which has been trained in training sessions, or go for additional pages. Value education by teaching and implementing discipline.
  • From junior and senior child found its own identity try to make friends. They started sharing their likes and dislikes improving. In this age teachers main task is to handle their increasing energy which they started converting in new experiments. In this age they are more eagerly awaiting for new gadgets, new voices, shapes colors as well as music.
  • Teachers have to be very creative to use this curiosity and energy in expanding academics by correct writing using proper linings. Mathematics basics should be very clean and perfect. As it is base for all careers. Please refer attached techniques to develop math’s skill.
  • As we have given base of EVS in Playgroup and Nursery now it's time to label it with spellings and sentences along with drawings. Please refer attached worksheets for it.
  • Phonic sounds and introduction of capital, small and cursive patterns are expected by the end of senior K.G. Tables along with basics unit places addition and subtraction with explanation of multiplication using tables till 10.
  • From age 1 to 4 the child is facing problems at home as well as in surroundings because those who were paying attention on him/ her, situation has been changed everyone treating them like an elder and trying to make them independent. This happens generally suddenly instead it should happen step by step by junior KG or in nursery.
  • Here the teacher is the only mediator between family and child to make him her comfortable with changes external as well as internal because they improve in energy level and exploring new areas.
  • Here itself fight begins for own identity getting feelings of ownership on friends and things.
  • Prescribed syllables are important for the children's development. We as school teachers feel that it's our responsibility to make it simple, creative and interesting and meaningful.
  • Every teacher should understand that only teaching is not worth until and unless we teach the child how to use this in day to day routine. Teacher should possess deep knowledge and execution process to make the child cope up with the academics and surroundings.
  • We suggest to each and every teacher, don't ever think that you are teaching someone as we found earlier that they come along with their own perspective and personality. Whether the child is in Playgroup or in 10th Std. Act as their Mentor, monitoring the developments of them by providing useful guidance to utilize every instruction and information the brain receives.
  •  By 4th std. a child should understand difference between science and EVS as well as should know math’s with perfection of tables. Child should easily go with languages. Which has been expected in CBSE pattern that Higher languages. Child should learn to link up subjects with each other for example how math’s is useful to understand geography.
  • Again creativity is a core of life. It gives us explanation, exploration, excitement, education. Please refer pages for each and every activity which we are supposed to take for conceptual learning.
  • After 4th we have to convert emotional aspect towards professional, by maintaining proper distance we must get respect or teacher should earn it by their knowledge behavior concerns and techniques. Yes, it's tact to make child self motivated learner this should achieved by 7th std. Child must learn to find answers by their own not only related to syllabus but also related to culture and religion, science and spiritual.
  • Here more equipment is needed to make them understand of each and every concept. As these is the base of 8th. Study is becoming major part of their lives, which is going to help them In every aspect but yes off course it doesn't mean it should bind them under fear of it being the only way of becoming successful. Equally we must teach them importance of hardworking and focusing.
